The Creek Hedge

This hedge is composed of Buttonwood (Platanus occidentalis), Pawpaw (Asimina triloba), and Canebreak (Arundinaria gigantea). The Buttonwood is partially cut at the base every third year, and then laid over; the laid part continues to grow, and new shoots appear at the base. The uprights of the Pawpaw and Canebreak provide rigidity, helping to thicken and strengthen the hedge. In addition to providing habitat for birds, we intend this hedge to eventually be thick enough to keep out the deer. The Pawpaws will also provide delicious fruit, and the Canebreak is one of three bamboo native to the US.
