The Upper Garden
This part of the garden was once a historic garden, and then mowed as a lawn. Many of the large trees here are original to the house, including a ca. 200 year-old dogwood we call “The Old Lady.”
This area also has over 20 species of native wild-flower that have re-appeared since we stopped mowing and returned it to a garden, including 2 species of wild orchid in the genus Spiranthes (S. lacera & S. vernalis), which is one of the genera Matthew studies! We take this as a sign this was ‘meant to be!
