The Dry Slope
This is the driest part of the garden, with shale bedrock just below a quarter inch of soil. This light-green, fissile (thinly splitting) clay shale is actually called Rogersville Shale by the USGS. The purple flower is Heliotropium amplexicaule, which is likely an old escaped plant from the original historic gardens. Matthew planted Beech Plum (Prunus maritima) and Pitch Pine (Pinus rigida) to remind him of Long Island.
